Demystifying The Path To Private Equity

Navigating the Landscape that Comes After the Investment Banking Analyst Program

Conclusion

Keep an open mind... spend time thinking about whether you see yourself in investment banking long-term. Do not just recruit for private equity because everyone else is doing it. Do so if you are genuinely interested in the industry and are up for the challenge. Also note that the investment banks have their own private equity divisions (i.e. Morgan Stanley Capital Partners or Goldman Sachs Direct Private Investing, to give two examples), so make sure to explore lateral opportunities within the investment bank itself as well!

  • I want to re-highlight how important it is of a decision whether or not you participate in on-cycle recruiting. As discussed in Step 1, know that you get one chance to interview with many of these private equity firms... if you interview unprepared at one of your top choices and unfortunately are not successful with them in the process, it is unlikely you will get a second chance

  • It is best to come into the on-cycle processes with your top private equity firm choices in mind... all of the firms will be interviewing at the same time during on-cycle, and you may have to prioritize if processes conflict

  • Most Importantly: Remember that you have a fantastic job as an investment banking analyst. Use your best judgement and manage responsibilities accordingly should you have workstreams that conflict with on-cycle recruiting processes. Investment banks were not born yesterday, and are completely aware of when on-cycle recruiting happens. I fortunately had a group that was incredibly supportive about the process, and actually reached out to us first letting us know that they are aware "its a thing, people will do it, and all we ask is that you are honest about when it happens / when you have interviews". Obviously, this varies firm to firm, and you should use your best judgement about how you communicate stepping away from the desk. As stated numerous times, know that you can always recruit off-cycle.

I wish you the best of luck in this process. As highlighted in the "About The Author & Contact" section, feel free to send me a note. Always happy to talk through any questions.
